BISOU Brain Injury Association Uganda (BIAU) formerly known as Brain Injury Association of Uganda is an indigenous National Association of Persons with Acquired Brain Injury, together with their care givers. BIAU was formed in 2011 with an aim of improving the lives of those affected by brain injury and reducing the incidence and impact of brain injury through advocacy, education, and support. BIAU is a non-governmental organization (NGO) registered by the NGO Bureau under Ministry of Internal Affairs with Registration INDR169376259NB.
Since its inception, BIAU has gone through many structural, policy and cultural changes; she has grown in membership, funding and projects, registered numbers of successes, failures and challenges. From operating in just two District (Kampala and Wakiso) in 2011, BIAU has expanded to operate in 8 more Districts with a membership of 287 fully paid-up individual members.
BIAU was formed after the founder realizing that PWABIs were marginalized, discriminated and not excluded in most of government programs. Basing on this the founders noticed that;
- There was an eminent need to bring disability especially brain injury, out of the shadows and the need to mobilize families and other key stakeholders for support
- There was an invisible need to promote PWABIs, protect their rights and freedoms after recognizing that; the rights of individuals, whether disabled or not are inherent and recognized and protected by the various United Nations Human Rights instruments and more so the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRDP)
For the last four (4) years, BIAU has gone through many structural, policy and cultural changes; she has grown in membership, funding and projects, registered numbers of successes, failures and challenges. After series of reflection and consultations with various stakeholders, BIAU has resolved to change her strategy from project oriented approach to program based approach.
