Inclusive Education
The Inclusive Education Program is about ensuring that Learners with Acquired Brain Injuries have access to a quality education that is inclusive, removes barriers to learning, respects rights, and leads to fulfilment of potential. Though education is a basic human right for all the people regardless of their physical, mental and social status; their mental disposition, sex, birth or ethnic origin, Learners with brain injuries are frequently left behind in education. Majority of schools have no teachers trained in how to identify and teach learners with brain injuries.
As a measure to promote inclusive education in Uganda, BIAU in partnership with National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) develop a teacher’s resource book to support teachers in teaching learners with ABI and other related brain disorders. This is in line with the objective of the Special Needs Education (SNE) and Inclusive Education (IE) of Uganda (2012) which states, “The present trend of inclusive education and policy thrust embraces modifications in curricula, teaching methods, teaching/learning resources”.
Through the Inclusive Advocacy component, we work with PWABI and Disability People Organizations to strengthen their knowledge on Inclusive Education and the use of national and international legal frameworks, so that they can effectively advocate for their rights, raise awareness and hold government accountable.
