Awareness raising about acquired brain injury

Many people have negative perceptions or stereotypes about disability, especially when it is acquired later in life. Negative attitudes about disability impact on all aspects of the lives of persons with disabilities, including the ability to access education, to participate in non-exploitative work, to live where and with whom one chooses, to marry and start a family, and to move about freely within the community.

To address these negative attitudes, BIAU implements the following measures:

  • Community sensitization campaigns through radio, TV, social media, and community dialogues.
  • Dissemination of information on causes, prevention, and management of brain injuries.
  • Storytelling and personal testimonies to humanize the experiences of persons with ABI.
  • Collaborations with local leaders, schools, health centers, and workplaces to foster inclusive environments.
  • Implementing school-based disability rights awareness programmes
  • strengthening documentation and reporting on human rights violations against persons with disabilities that are rooted in stigma and customary beliefs
